When shopping for a dress you already have so many things on your mind. I want to give you the top things to do PRIOR to saying yes to the wedding dress.

Tip 1: VISION

Before you start the hunt for your dream wedding dress, remember to start with research. Have your Pinterest board started, gather wedding inspiration consider your venue, accessories, floral arrangements, and wedding palate; these details will greatly influence your dress choice. Decide if you are going for a BOHO look, elegant, luxurious or classic.

Tip 2: BUDGET

Once you have a pretty clear vision of your dream wedding dress, set a budget. Do research on the designers you like and what they retail for. Decide on a price point you’re comfortable with and stick to it. Determining a realistic wedding dress budget can be difficult but rest assured that there is a dress for every price range.

Tip 3: TIMING

You should start shopping 10-12 months before your wedding, and have an order placed at least 6 months ahead of time. Of course, the ordering process can be expedited, but 6 months should allow plenty of time for shipping, alterations, etc.

**If your schedule is flexible, book your appointments midweek when boutiques are the slowest. You’ll have a more relaxed experience during that time frame. Weekends are super busy for shops, so the energy can be more intense and can feel a bit stressful.

Tip 4: SHOP

Choose an authorized retailer based on budget, location, sizing options, and your personal style. Aside from style and sizing options, location is a big factor to consider. I recommend discussing where to shop with your planner because more than likely they will have a recommended store that they work closely with and already have a connection with.  You might not mind traveling a 100 miles initially, but keep in mind that it won’t just be one visit. You’ll be making that trip several times over the course of about six months for fittings and alterations. Try to find a retailer that is located near you and one that comes highly recommended by your wedding planner.

KEEP IN MIND:

Shopping for a dress is a unique and special experience, so enjoy it!

  • Trust your consultant and let them take care of you. Your consultant should be able to walk you through all the details, from price and styles to alterations, deposits, cancellation policy, etc.
  • Don’t feel pressured to buy anything, but if you find a dress you absolutely love, go for it! Trust your gut and don’t doubt yourself.
  • Forget about size! Bridal wear is very different from the ready-to-wear world. Instead, focus on the perfect fit
  • Stick to your budget and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Remember that this is your experience, your wedding, and your dress. You’re the only one who knows exactly what you want and how you feel in a particular dress. Choose what makes you feel more beautiful than you already are and make sure you can DANCE in it!
